Adolescent Treatment - Time for Braces

Time for Braces (11-14 Years)

Adolescent treatment refers to treatment that occurs during adolescence when all of the permanent teeth are erupted or are erupting with the exception of the wisdom teeth. Typically, the majority of adolescent treatments occur on patients between the ages of 11-14 years when the patient is still growing.

Adolescent treatment can occur as a single comprehensive phase of treatment or as a second phase of treatment following an early treatment phase.

All adolescent treatments involve the correction of tooth alignment and bite issues utilizing "braces" that are bonded or glued to the front surfaces of the teeth. No headgear or other external appliances are ever required. On occasion, removal of permanent teeth is necessary to resolve crowding issues or to compensate the dentitions to an underlying skeletal discrepancy. Your child's diagnosis and treatment plan is discussed in detail with you and your child following the diagnostic record process. There is ample opportunity to have your questions and concerns addressed by our doctors.

The active treatment phase of most adolescent cases extends 12-24 months. It is important that patients comply in four crucial ways in order to ensure that treatment is completed on time or earlier. These important factors are as follows:

  1. Maintaining optimal oral hygiene.
  2. Maintaining the integrity of the braces and wires by adhering to our food list instructions thereby reducing breakages.
  3. Wearing and changing intra-oral elastics to correct bite issues as instructed.
  4. Attending at our office on a regular basis for appointments.

When treatment is extended as a result of lack of patient compliance, monthly treatment extension fees are applied until the treatment is completed. Rarely, is this ever necessary, because our team endeavours to correct any situations that arise as early as possible during treatment.

When treatment is completed, a special appointment is arranged for the removal of the braces to reveal a new smile. This appointment is generally scheduled for one and one-half hours. Following removal of the braces and all residual bonding material, upper and lower fixed retaining wires are custom bent and bonded to the inside surfaces of the front teeth. It is our philosophy that these wires remain in place indefinitely to prevent any changes in alignment. An upper dental impression is also taken at this appointment to fabricate a removable appliance designed to be worn on the upper teeth short-term. Please refer to the retention page under the treatment menu for further information.
