Which Type of Braces are for You?

In our practice, we offer three different appliance options; metal braces, ceramic/clear braces and inside/lingual braces:

Metal Braces (Master Series™ by American Orthodontics):

Metal Braces - Closeup

Metal braces are included in your treatment fee and are the most effective and efficient appliances to move the teeth. They are also the most durable. The majority of our adolescent patients and many of our adult patients are treated with this type of appliance. These braces are very popular with kids because they are decorated with coloured ties that can be changed at every appointment with so many great colours to choose from. For those patients wanting a more conservative look, we use silver coloured ties.

Over the years, metal braces have become more technologically advanced and smaller in size. Bands or rings around the teeth are now very seldom ever used making the "tin grin" essentially obsolete. These braces are bonded directly to the tooth surfaces using a specialized glass ionomer cement that releases fluoride. The bond is designed to be strong enough to sustain the light forces of tooth movement during treatment and yet possible to break when it is time to remove braces without causing damage to the tooth's surface.

Ceramic/Clear Braces (Radiance™ by American Orthodontics):

Ceramic Clear Braces - Radiance

Ceramic braces are a clear, esthetic type of braces reserved mostly for adult treatment. In the majority of adult cases, ceramic braces are placed on the teeth of the upper arch only. Placement of this type of brace is contraindicated in the lower arch because ceramic is harder than tooth enamel and if any of the top teeth should interfere with lower ceramic braces the top teeth can be worn. For this reason, we recommend using ceramic braces on the upper teeth only which are most visible to others and metal braces on the lower opposing dentition to avoid creating an additional problem.

Clear elastic ties are used to engage the archwire into the ceramic braces. Although we use the highest quality and most stain resistant ties available, they do tend to discolour to some degree especially with foods such as red wine, coffee, tea, curry and anything tomato based. For these reasons, we recommend obstaining from these foods in order to keep your braces their brightest. There is a supplemental fee for these braces in addition to the treatment fee.

Inside/Lingual Braces (InCognito™ by 3M Unitek):

Inside Lingual Braces - Apparatur Ende

InCognito™ braces are placed on the back side of your teeth so no one will know you are wearing braces unless you tell them. These braces are 100% customizable to follow the contours of your teeth for comfort and performance. A unique prescription, determined by our doctor, is built into your InCognito™ braces so your teeth will move in the most efficient manner possible. Your wires are bent with robotic technology to ensure we get the results you want.

InCognito™ braces are a good option for most adult patients who have all their permanent teeth. Speech can be a little difficult at first because these braces occupy some of your tongue space, but with some simple exercises your speech will become quite natural. Because of the advanced technology employed by this technique, these braces are almost twice as expensive as traditional ones.
