Instructions for Permanent
Retaining Wires

A small flat braided wire is bonded to the inside surfaces of the upper four incisors. The purpose of this wire is to retain the corrected alignment of these teeth long-term preventing previous rotations of the teeth and spaces from relapsing.

A round heat-treated wire is bonded to the inside surfaces of the lower canines and rests passively against the back surfaces of the four lower incisors in between. This wire prevents aging changes from occurring, which present as inward collapse or crowding of the incisors towards the tongue.

These wires stay in place indefinitely so it’s important to look after them.

Tips to Keep Your Wires in Tip-Top Shape

1

Avoid biting into hard foods such as carrots on the front teeth. Biting on the side teeth will ensure that your wires remain intact.

2

Cut hard fruits into smaller pieces.

3

Should either of your wires become bent or broken, contact our office at your earliest convenience to schedule an appointment to have it repaired.

4

When brushing, pay special attention to the wires as plaque and food can build up in these areas.

5

Use the flossing technique taught in the office, being careful not to put excessive pressure on the wires.

We recommend your first appointment as early as 7 years old.
